What's a Calabash?It all started in the 1930s. In a sleepy little fishing village nestled between inlets and marshes just over the North Carolina border, fisherman brought in their catch. They were met by the locals who wanted to see what had been caught, and what they could buy. Calabash quickly became known for fine quality fresh shrimp and fish.

Under the trees, the fishing crews were fed, and the aromatic smell of fresh fish, cooking in big pots, prompted residents to buy any left over cooked seafood to eat on the spot. Clinton Morse, a local businessman, began serving up tubs of deep-fried seafood that had been dipped in a light, seasoned batter, cooked golden brown and served very hot. "Calabash style" seafood was born - conjuring up his recipe
and the image of massive quantities and varieties of seafood. These open
air picnics were the beginning of a number of area restaurants still delivering
quality seafood fresh off the docks. |
Today, Hurricane Fleet marina is located next to one of the "original" Calabash seafood restaurants - and there are some two dozen others to carry on the tradition of excellent, varied, fresh fish. You can also enjoy one of the largest and most unique gift shops, Callahan's
of Calabash, with over 20,000 square feet of exceptional treasures. Next
door is St. Nick Nacks Christmas Shop (Halloween & Easter Shops),
the largest on the Grand Strand with over two million beautiful ornaments.
Ample free parking makes this your ideal stop for your family or groups,
and it's right around the corner from The Hurricane Fleet Marina. |
